AN INTERVIEW WITH YUMEARTH ORGANICS
My friend Sergio Bicas and I were new dads with little babies. While we had always fed our young children a healthy and wholesome diet, we knew our kids would want to have treats as they got older. We dreamt aloud of making lollipops that we would feed our kids, because we are both big lollipop fans,. They would taste spectacular, be all natural and have no artificial colors and flavors and no high fructose corn syrup. We simply could not let go of our dream, so YumEarth was born!
We were lucky enough to get in touch with Sergio & Rob, the two Dads behind these delicious treats, and ask them some questions. Read on to find out how they became "the best lollipop" Today Show food critic Phil Lempert (and I) have ever tasted! (Our questions are in bold, their answers in regular font.)
We jumped out of our chairs! We truly put an unbelievable amount of effort and sometimes spend many months handcrafting the taste of each flavor. So, for our lollipops to be recognized by the Today Show Food Critic, Phil Lempert, as “best lollipop I ever tasted,” we felt we might have a hit on our hands not only with kids, but with grown-ups that have a real taste for gourmet flavor.
What is your favorite flavor lollipop? We love Peach Perfection!
I’m in a Perfectly Peach zone right now. I have gone months searching for the Pomegranate Pucker or the Mango Tango pops first in the bag, but I am really keyed in on the Perfectly Peach now and everyone in my family knows. We all go through our flavor phases, but our four year old always wins because we all agree he is the cutest. For now.
It was never the plan to make gluten-free candy, just treats with healthier ingredients, though our friends with school age children at the time encouraged us to make our facility peanut and tree nut free and free of all the major allergens so their kids would be allowed to bring our treats to school. Surprisingly, five years after founding YumEarth I found out that I had celiac disease, which gave me such a different perspective on the frustrations experienced by people with allergies. I love that I am able to enjoy all our candy because we have always been gluten free. Now it’s something we always think about in new product development. Our latest product, YumEarth Organics Fruit Snacks, are vegan because we got a lot of encouraging feedback to make a vegan version of our gummy bears.
What’s next for Yum Earth Organics? Any new candies we can start hoping for?
I’ll tell you a little secret; our next treat is a tropical assortment of our popular YumEarth Organics Fruit Snacks, which will, of course, be vegan and gluten free as well. We’ll be launching YumEarth Organics Tropical Fruit Snacks very soon!
