When Stephanie of North Coast Organics approached me with an offer to try a sample of their vegan, organic, hand-made in Chicago deodorants, I was all for it. I normally don’t wear any deodorant-type product at all, but sometimes wear mineral salts when the heat makes me a little stinky. I have sensitive skin and because of that, a seriously hard time finding cruelty-free products that don’t me make me itchy and rashy, or that work at all, really. I was intrigued by the two mini-deodorant samples that showed up in my mailbox. Wrapped in cute, eco-friendly packaging, two three-inch tall clear plastic containers tumbled out. I immediately had to open them and smell them, reveling in the delicate scent of each, both Revolver and Death by Lavender.
Presumably the Revolver is for men, the Death by Lavender for women, but I immediately fell in love with the gentle woodsey scent of the Revolver, so it was the first one I tested. Don’t get me wrong, the Death by Lavender was equally as delicate, a truly enjoyable scent. But for a girl who normally has no scent, I worked my way into it. I wore the Revolver for a full week of working double shifts waitressing. I needed this stuff to keep me stink free. And it did! Not only that, but I felt like it kept me surprisingly dry as well. No sweat dripping, no stench...I was sold!
I dedicated a week to the Death by Lavender next. I was pleasantly surprised by the hint of floral and fell in love with it more and more as I wore it. The scent does seem to get a little stronger with heat, but thats when you really need it, anyway. I never found the smell distracting or overpowering, and especially with the Death by Lavender scent never felt like I needed to re-apply.
I love that its made from 5 simple, understandable ingredients: coconut oil, cornstarch, baking soda, carnauba wax, and essential oils for scent.
Did I mention all the ingredients are 100% organic?
Plus if you’re not into scented stuff, they offer a ‘naked’ version, sent-free. Thats the kind of product I give my seal of approval. So here it is North Coast Organics: You’ve won me over, stolen my heart. I love your deodorants and I am lucky to have found them. And I mean it. NEW VEGAN PRODUCTS
Lately we've been enjoying trying all kinds of new things. Being in Maine has allowed us to try a lot of new (to us), Maine made products. Having expendable cash has allowed us to splurge a little and try some new national vegan product releases, as well.
We're here to share some of our very favorites from the last few weeks.
This kimchi, picked up at Rising Tide, our small and local co-op, is life changing. And really local! In fact, after purchasing, we found out that this kimchi is made about 2 miles up the road from us at Thirty Acre Farm in Whitefield.
They make 20,000 pounds of organic sauerkraut, Ruby kraut, Kimchi, gingered carrots and sour dill pickles every year and grow over 95% of the ingredients themselves. How badass is that? So proud of my fellow Mainers! And did I mention, this stuff is fantastic? It retails for around $6 for a 15 ounce jar but lasts at least a week in our house. Its great munched on by itself- I bring some to work everyday! But its also fantastic on sandwiches, in fried rice or noodle dishes, and soups. Plus, we should all be eating more fermented foods. Foods are considered fermented when the lactobacilli bacteria convert their sugars and starches into lactic acid, naturally preserving the food itself. This makes the it easier to digest and rich in dietary fiber, plus gives you over 50% of your daily Vitamin C intake.
Health magazine named Kimchi in its top 5 list of World Healthiest Foods for being rich in vitamins, aiding digestion, and even possibly reducing cancer growth.

Before we get going on this one- I have heard the sad truths about palm oil, and I have incredibly reduced the amount of earth balance I use in my everyday life...but I had to try their new shortening. I bake a lot,
and was really curious how this stuff would hold up and taste in a batch of my famous chocolate chip cookies.
Without launching into details of how rich and wonderful they came out, let me just tell you that I was sincerely impressed. All the good, fatty texture without that sort of fake butter flavor. My family said they tasted so rich, they couldn't get enough!
The sticks are packaged just like the butter sticks, 4-1/2 cup sticks per package. They were whitish-clear in color and easy to slice through with a butter knife. Almost comparable to a product like crisco in texture and melt-ability.
On the other hand, to avoid using products like this all the time, try mixing a bit of coconut oil and applesauce for a fairly similar result.
It was worth trying, and in a pinch I would probably use it again.

Another Earth Balance release this year: the raved about white cheddar popcorn. I will admit- I miss that cheesy flavor sometimes. Nutritional yeast and Daiya get me through the day, but sometimes I crave more. Not enough to ever go out and eat real
from-a-cow cheese, but enough to want case loads of this delicious snack delivered to my door.
As you can see from pictures, I made a pretty size-able dent before even getting it home to photograph.
For those of you cheese-cravers like me, this product is heaven. It tastes sort of like Smartfood Popcorn, my childhood weakness, but is lightyears healthier. It is made with non-GMO corn and navy beans, and has a slight garlic flavor.
It is lick-your-fingers-clean good.
Highly recommended to quell those cravings, and travels well! Now if only they'd come up with a cinnamon sugar flavor...

We tried Beyond Meat for the first time this week and have had some almost everyday since. It is by far the most realistic chicken-like product I've ever tasted. Even knowing it was vegan before I tried it I insisted on checking the ingredients again after the first bite- how did they get it to taste and feel so realistic?!
Even my Dad, a self-proclaimed Carnivore Extraordinaire, loved it. We made big salads loaded with veggies and snuck some of this on top and it was fantastic. Everyone went back for seconds!
Besides being 100% vegan and gluten-free, beyond meat chicken-free strips are a complete protein, containing 18 grams of protein per serving. It currently comes in three flavors: southwest, grilled, and lightly seasoned. My favorite so far is the southwest; paired with avocado, tomato, and dijon mustard on a sandwich is my favorite way to eat it. But Beyond Meat is so good, I've been stopping by the fridge for a strip or two cold, straight from the package. I can't wait to try more recipes with the stuff-its really great!

a delicious review!
When I first stumbled upon the Gluten Free Vegan Bakerista
blog, I was intrigued. It was filled with delicious looking recipes with a common theme: all of the delicious desserts (and several savory treats, too!) were made with some sort of Wholesome Chow cake or frosting mix involved! I was really
intrigued. What were these miracle mixes that were helping make all of these wonderful treats? I had to know! I wanted to try some of these recipes!
Luckily, linked to the blog is the Wholesome Chow main page. In fact, the blog is written by Veronica, co-owner (with her husband and adorable baby) of Wholesome Chow. All of their baking mixes and frosting mixes are 100% vegan and gluten-free...which is pretty much perfection in my book.
I got in touch with Veronica and asked her about her wonder-mixes. She was sweet, helpful, and even let me try my choice of cake & frosting!
The mixes they offer include an all-purpose baking mix, vanilla cake mix, chocolate cake mix, lavender cake mix, chai spice cake mix, chocolate lavender cake mix, and a vanilla frosting mix.
All of them sounded wonderful, but the chai spice sounded heavenly.
When we got back from our trip to Maine, we had a small cardboard box waiting for us. We tore it open, immediately ripping open the sealed plastic bag inside the small brown bags with the cute labels.
We stuffed our noses inside the bags, inhaling the chai spice and vanilla scents. We were drooling. The chai scent was incredible, rich with cardamom and cinnamon, just a hint of vanilla present. The vanilla frosting mix, made of just organic powdered sugar and organic vanilla powder, reminded me of Christmas- it smelled just like sugar cookies!
I happen to own, in my opinion at least, the very cutest bundt pan. I bought it at a local Goodwill for seventy five cents. It was the very first baking pan I bought when Alex and I moved in together. Its two-toned yellow and totally '70s and I totally love it.
Bundt cakes are adorable anyway. The way the bundt forms the cake makes decorating basically unnecessary. And, I always get the most evenly cooked cakes in my bundt pan.
Its a keeper.
The Wholesome Chow mixes were super easy to whip up. The cake mix only required oil, vinegar, and a little non-dairy milk, plus the help of a whisk.
It took about 5 minutes from start to finish. I loved it.
The whole time I was totally enveloped in how wonderful it smelled! It had probably 2 or 3 whole spoonfuls of raw batter before pouring into my beloved bundt pan. I had to. It was sooo good!
After about 25 minutes in the oven, the house was filled with chai spice aroma.
We pulled the cake out, let it cool, and started on the frosting.
The frosting mix can be made into a thick vanilla frosting or a creamy vanilla glaze. There are also cream cheese and chocolate variations if you're feeling adventurous. We weren't.
We thought the glaze would be better on the bundt cake than a thick frosting, so we added 3 tablespoons of homemade hemp milk to the mix...and voila! Creamy, decadent vanilla glaze that only took about 2 minutes to prepare.
Since I don't normally eat tons of sugar, the frosting definitely seemed very rich, but it is frosting, and that's kind of the point.
The glaze poured beautifully onto the cooled cake. The glaze was just thick enough that it stuck nicely where I poured it on instead of all dripping off. Now, it was time to taste it all together, the finished product. Alex and I cut generous slices for ourselves. The cake was the perfect texture, not over or undercooked in the least. It was flecked with real spices and covered in vanilla. The first bite was awesome: a seriously good mix of chai and vanilla...like a warm chai latte in cake form.
I scarfed the down my first piece so quickly, I had to go back for a second piece.
I didn't really mind.
It was by far the best from-a-box cake I've ever eaten. And the best park? It not JUNK.
I love that Wholesome Chow is certified organic by the USDA and the CCOF. They're also certified vegan, gluten-free, non-GMO and kosher. Still not sold? On top of that, all of their prodicts are made in a facility that is 100% dedicated to being gluten, wheat, peanut, nut, dairy, and egg free.
Basically, they're certifiably some of the best dessert mixes on the market. I'm happy to say that Wholesome Chow will definitely become a go-to for quick desserts in my house.
Now I just need to get my hands on that lavender cake mix...

And do that. Because until you get this cake in your mouth, you are seriously missing out. Its perfect when your short on time, ingredients, or just want someone else to do most of the work for once. Have any of you tried Wholesome Chow products before?
I'm seriously looking forward to ordering the lavender cake mix and the all-purpose baking mix to use for pancakes and for these cinnamon sugar scones
Thanks again to Veronica, Jeffrey, and Wholesome Chow for letting us try your awesome products, we enjoyed every last bite!
Hippocrates said: “Let your food be your medicine.” He was right. He understood that food ultimately controlled health, and that how we feel is a direct consequence of what we put into our bodies.
Proper nutrition affects us everyday in terms of energy storage, functioning as properly as we need to, even controlling sleep patterns. Allowing the body to receive the nutrients it needs through the proper food sources is a gift we should all be giving to our hard-workin’ bodies. Unfortunately, eating right isn’t all there is to it.
Root Formulas is a company started about 6 months ago by Lee Schwalb and Andrea Medina in San Francisco, CA. They make tinctures and tonics using natural, homeopathic ingredients (grown locally whenever possible) combined with a vast knowledge of ancient Chinese, Ayurvedic, Western, and progressive preventative medicine.
Lee is a licensed acupuncturist by trade, and we got to meet up with him to talk about the formulas and how they work. He explained that while ancient Chinese medicine used herbs native and local to China and other Asian countries, our westernized bodies cannot easily handle Eastern herbs. Many people may protest that they have had great success with Chinese herbs, but some of us westerners simply can’t handle them as well.
Our bodies are used to ingesting different sorts of foods, so to ensure absorption and the quality of their product, Lee and Andrea use herbs more native to Americans and our bodies. By making them in this way, they are more rapidly absorbed through the blood stream and thus more effective.
He also explained that while most people understand that exercise and nutrition are the foundations of a healthy lifestyle, they aren’t eating the right foods to be healthy. For instance, if you’re ingesting lots of crummy foods, the nutrients provided are sparse and have an extremely hard time being absorbed by the body. By supplementing with, for instance, the digestion formula, the nutrients react to the herbal stimulant which help clear a path through the yucky stuff so the nutrients can be absorbed into the body.
Another great thing about Root Formula’s products? All of the ingredients are things you’ve actually heard of: ginger, dandelion root, licorice, cayenne, and passionflower are just a few ingredients found in their products. When was the last time you could pronounce everything in the ingredients list on the medicine bottle? Probably never! The simplicity of their product is comforting in a world full of prescription bottles and empty results.
Their more popular formulas include the sleep formula, made with valerian and hops, and the calming formula, made with St. Johns wort and chamomile.
They gave me a few bottles of the digestion formula and the PMS formula to try for myself, because the proof is in the pudding (er, tonic)! I have been using the digestion formula for about two weeks now, and the PMS formula for the past week. After just three days of taking the digestion formula (1 teaspoon with 8 ounces of water, three times daily) I noticed a difference in how my tummy felt after I ate, like my food was being processed more efficiently. My food seemed to be digesting more easily, not sitting in my stomach for as long. I also noticed that the need to snack in between breakfast and lunch seemed to ease, as though the formula was allowing my body to truly absorb all of the nutrients of my food, keeping me satisfied longer. The PMS formula is truly awesome. It helped ease almost all of my normal symptoms, including irritability, indigestion, and excess gas and bloating. I can’t speak highly enough of it!
For more from Lee, check out the Food as Medicine page. Lee will be writing articles for us on using food to benefit your health and body. He's a smart guy, so take a look!**UPDATE**Root Formulas has since closed, unfortunately. Thanks for reading, though! Check out our other, current product reviews here.
